Nine year old Simon is a fourth grader at Valley School. He begins to write a book to enter in a young author's writing contest at his school. He makes up four different characters, all of them kids his age, named Johnny, Jackie, Lindsay, and Mikey. Together, these four kids in his book form a club and call themselves "The Pranksters" as they try to make people laugh by playing silly practical jokes.Simon gets started writing about them, but then begins to procrastinate, putting the book off until there are less than two weeks before it is due. The four kids from the story get bored and come to life, playing small practical jokes and getting Simon into a little trouble. Things begin to take a turn for the worse when their harmless pranks become more sinister and dangerous acts. Realizing that his very life is at stake, Simon must finish writing the book as it is the only way these "ghosts" will be put to rest.
